03/09/2015 00:00:00 Ho Tzu Nyen – The Cloud of Unknowing Downtown Free

The Cloud of Unknowing is titled after a fourteenth century mystical treatise on faith, where the cloud paradoxically acts as a metaphor for both an impediment to, and reconciliation with, the unknown or the divine experience. Shot in a decaying block of vacated apartments in the remote outskirts of Singapore, The Cloud of Unknowing is fittingly flooded with ghostly presences. Ethereal clouds infiltrate and invade the homes of the eight characters, culminating in hysterical confrontations with inscrutable specters. Each vignette is based on characters drawn from Western European artworks by such artists as Tintoretto, Caravaggio, Francisco de Zurbarán, and René Magritte, as well as the Eastern landscapes of Mi Fu and Wen Zhengming.

Drawing on a diverse range of recent acquisitions in the University of Toronto and Hart House Collections, this exhibition considers how signs and symbols have been observed, adopted, and altered in the work of artists from early modernity to today. The exhibition captures the ways in which commercial graphics shape urban landscapes -- whether in the proliferation of billboards and screens, the identity of nations and institutions, or the visual logic of window display. In response, artists have initiated their own symbolic studies and counter campaigns, progressively infiltrating signs and symbols to their own ends. Sign, sign, everywhere a sign encapsulates work of several generations of artists from across Canada and around the world.

03/07/2015 00:00:00 This is for You, Anna Downtown

This is for You, Anna is a haunting exploration of revenge, liberation and motherhood. Breaking the mould of contemporary theatre, it demands that we acknowledge a new perspective and a new possibility in storytelling. When it made its debut in the 1980s, it was the first of its kind: a collective creation that strove to construct a theatrical story that was wholly female. From its structure and creative process to its subject matter and performing space, This is for You, Anna is a cheekily satirical and surprisingly poignant play that stands apart even today. Collectively created by Suzanne Khuri, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Banuta Rubess and Maureen White Directed by Chelsea Dab Hilke

03/07/2015 00:00:00 Sign, Sign, Everywhere a Sign Downtown Free

Showcasing paintings by renowned artists such as Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, Prudence Heward, A.Y. Jackson, David Milne, Lilias Torrance Newton, and Tom Thomson, A Story of Canadian Art at UTAC will be the first opportunity since 1987 for the University of Toronto community to view a major selection of the early 20th century collection.

03/07/2015 00:00:00 Ho Tzu Nyen – The Cloud of Unknowing Downtown Free
